Reading Slumps
After getting back into reading, I thought it was best to make my own little cosy corner where I can write tips and updates on my reading journey throughout the year. I would have done this on my Annie travels blog but I thought it would be nicer to have a whole section dedicated to my passion for reading and writing.
So for my first ever post I though it was fitting to write about my experience with the internet term of "reading slumps" I was not aware of the term before joining booktok and bookstragm as I just thought it was me being lazy and not consistent.
To my surprise it was the complete opposite as it was just me putting so much pressure on myself to read an insane amount in a short span that I got tired. This wasn't something that just happened once, it kept occurring after a few months and it was starting to demotivate me with reading all together.
So I wanted to reassure other people that reading slumps are completely normal. We all read in different paces and have different ideas of goals we want to achieve and we all have different commitments and lifestyles outside of our hobbies and interests. Coming to terms with that makes it much easier to come out of the unrealistic standards we put on ourselves.
Furthermore, lets get onto the tips to get back into the reading flow.
- Don't be afraid to start another book or try to get out of the habit and pressure of having to finish a book because you started it. If it is draining you, the beauty of it is that you can always start it again when you feel more motivated to tackle it. I stand by starting as many other books on my shelf, till I find the one that gets me hooked. As the feeling of finishing something gives me the motivation to start another and gets me back in the flow.
- Try to surround yourself with that type of content. For example I watch my favourite booktubers and see if their going through the same thing or if they have any recommendations for me to try. Again it is important to remember their job is to influence you so they do tend to read multiple books a day.
- Moving from the last point your in competition with only yourself to beat your own goals not others.
To conclude this short post, enjoy the stillness in reading. It is a form of escapism and a sanctuary built purely on imagination. So don't get discouraged by a minor set back and try to use it as a break to find your next 5 star read.
Happy reading!
